The Philosophy First
A bug-out bag isn't a fantasy kit. It's not a YouTube loadout. It's not a chance to show off gear. It's the bag you grab with 60 seconds of warning when you need to walk out the door and not come back for 72 hours minimum.
That bag has to be realistic. It has to be packed and ready. It has to be light enough that you'll actually carry it under stress, over distance, possibly in the dark, possibly with family members who need help. The 60-pound "doomsday bag" is a fantasy for fit 25-year-olds on a sunny afternoon — not for a real evacuation scenario under real conditions.
Target weight: 25–35 pounds loaded. That's a range you can sustain over miles. Over that and you're making a choice between distance and gear. Under stress, choose distance.
This is my actual loadout, organized by category, with weights and reasoning. Everything here I've either used in the field or made a deliberate decision to include based on the scenarios it covers.
The Bag
5.11 Tactical RUSH72 — 55L, MOLLE, internal frame, padded shoulder straps and waist belt, clamshell opening for easy access. Runs about $180–220. Not the cheapest. Not the fanciest. Works. Has held up over years of use without a zipper failure or seam split. The Rush72 was designed for 72-hour ops and the volume is sized exactly right for this purpose.
The MOLLE system on the exterior lets you attach a medical pouch, radio pouch, or hydration reservoir to the outside without occupying bag volume.
Don't buy a bag from Amazon with no brand identity behind it. You'll find out its quality at exactly the wrong moment.

The Sawyer Squeeze filters down to 0.1 microns — all bacteria and protozoa. Aquatabs cover viruses. Use both from questionable sources. Carry 3 liters on your person, know where your next water source is before your bottles empty.

On fire: three different ignition methods. No one method works in all conditions. Lighters fail in cold. Matches fail in wind. Ferro rods work almost always but require dry tinder. Carry all three — combined they weigh under 6 oz.
On shelter: I don't always carry the tent. Vehicle BOB gets the tent. Foot BOB gets the tarp and bivvy. Tarp + ridgeline + bivvy is faster to set up than most tents, weighs less, and gives you better situational awareness around the shelter.

Total food: approximately 3,700 calories for 72 hours. Under normal exertion you need about 2,000/day. Moving under load in stress, you need closer to 3,000+. Plan for 2,000 and be ready to be hungry. Keep calorie density high — you're not eating for pleasure, you're fueling movement.
Mountain House freeze-dried meals have a 30-year shelf life. Rotate your bag food annually for anything shorter. Date everything with a Sharpie when you pack it.

Take a Stop the Bleed course before you need it. Gear without skills is theater. A tourniquet in untrained hands will be applied too late or too loosely. The course is two hours, often free, and widely available. There is no excuse not to have this skill.

A laminated card with your rally points, family contact numbers, and out-of-area contact number weighs nothing and works when every battery is dead. Make one. Put one in every bag.

Know how to use a map and compass before you need to. Take a land navigation course or spend an afternoon in a park learning it. GPS fails. Batteries die. A compass and a map do not.

Cash is non-negotiable. Card readers don't work when the grid is down. ATMs are empty 24 hours into a regional emergency. Two hundred dollars in small bills handles gas, food, motel, and emergency purchases in the window before things go truly dark.
Document copies — ID, passport, insurance cards, vehicle registration, medication list, emergency contacts. Laminate them or put them in a waterproof bag. If you ever have to prove who you are at a checkpoint or a shelter without your wallet, you'll want this.
What I Cut
Everything below was cut from an earlier version of this bag. It's worth explaining why, because you'll see all of it on YouTube loadout videos.
- Full survival kit (signal mirror, snare wire, fishing kit) — Useful skills. Marginally useful gear in a 72-hour BOB. If you're out 72 hours and relying on snares for food, something has gone very wrong.
- Hatchet — A good saw handles camp tasks. The hatchet is heavy for what it contributes in a 72-hour window.
- Full sleeping system — A bag goes in a vehicle BOB. In foot configuration, the bivvy and tarp handle 3-season temps with clothing layering. A sleeping bag adds 2–4 pounds.
- Solar panel — Great for extended scenarios. Too heavy for 72-hour loadout. The PowerCore bank covers phone and comms for the window.
- Freeze-dried food for 7 days — Creep. You're building a 72-hour bag, not a week bag. Keep scope control.
Vehicle BOB vs. Foot BOB
If you can drive out, you have different options. Your vehicle BOB lives in the truck and can carry significantly more weight:
- Add: tent, full sleeping system, 7-day food supply, larger water storage, hand tools
- Add: full medical kit (vs. trauma-only foot kit)
- Add: generator or battery station
- Add: 5-gallon fuel cans (stored safely)
The foot bag is the minimum viable kit. The vehicle bag is expanded capability. Know which scenario you're packing for.
DIY Section: The Budget BOB
Tier 1 — Built Right
The loadout above runs $500–800 assembled. Not cheap. But compare it to a single night in a hotel during a forced evacuation, times a family of four, times three nights — and suddenly $600 for a complete bag sounds reasonable.
Build it over time. Start with water (filter + Nalgene = $35). Add medical (trauma kit = $50). Add fire ($10 in lighters, matches, ferro rod). Add navigation ($20 compass + printed maps). The most critical capabilities cost under $150 and fit in a bag you already own.
Tier 2 — Raid Your House Right Now
No budget, no time. What can you assemble in 30 minutes from what you have?
- Backpack — any pack that fits your back and closes
- Water — fill the biggest bottles you own, add bleach drops (8 drops per gallon of clear water)
- Food — grab the most calorie-dense non-perishables from your pantry. Peanut butter, crackers, canned tuna, granola bars
- Warmth — a wool blanket or sleeping bag rolled and strapped outside the pack
- Light — every flashlight in the house, all the batteries that fit it
- First aid — grab your bathroom kit, add the dish towels as bandages
- Cash — everything in your wallet plus whatever's in the house
- Documents — grab the important ones on the way out
- Phone charger + portable bank
This gets you out the door and functional for 24–48 hours while you figure out your next move. It's not pretty. It works.
The Rule
Your bag is only as good as your ability to grab it and go. It doesn't help you if it's half-assembled, if the batteries are dead, if the food expired two years ago, or if it's buried under stuff in a closet.
Pack it. Seal it. Put it where you can reach it in the dark in 60 seconds. Check it twice a year — spring and fall, when you change your smoke detector batteries. Replace expired food. Recharge batteries. Verify it's still sized for your current situation.
The bag is only part of the plan. Know where you're going before you need to go there. Two destinations, two routes to each. Primary and backup for everything.
