What Is a Mini Hydro System?
A micro or mini hydro system converts the kinetic energy of flowing water into electricity. Water flows through a pipe called a penstock, spins a turbine, and that turbine drives a generator. Simple physics. No moving parts exposed to weather. No fuel. No panels to clean.
Two variables determine your output:
Head — the vertical drop of the water measured in feet. Flow — how much water is moving measured in GPM.
More head plus more flow equals more power. You don't need a raging river. A modest stream with good elevation drop can power an entire homestead.

A Word on Foreign and Budget Options
There are Chinese-manufactured Pelton wheel kits and PMAs on Amazon and AliExpress in the $80–$300 range. Some preppers use them. They work — until they don't. Quality control is inconsistent, support is nonexistent, and you're sending money to a government that would love to see American homesteaders dependent and powerless.
If budget is the only path right now, go in with eyes open. Buy a spare. Don't make it your primary system. Replace it with American iron as soon as you can.

DIY Section: Build It Before You Need It — Or After
Tier 1 — The Prepared Builder
You read this months ago. You acted. Here's what you built.
Parts list:
- Harris Hydroelectric PMA — American-made, purpose-built, long-term solution
- Pelton or Turgo wheel — sourced or fabricated from HDPE
- 2"–4" PVC or HDPE penstock from farm supply
- Aims Power PWM charge controller — American-assembled
- Battleborn LiFePO4 battery bank — American, veteran-supported
- Dump load — water heater element wired in parallel. Non-negotiable.
- Galvanized mesh intake screen — DIY in a bucket or barrel housing
Build sequence:
- Measure your head with a phone inclinometer app and tape measure. Time your flow with a bucket and stopwatch.
- Run penstock from intake down to turbine location. Minimize bends. Gravity does the work.
- Mount turbine and PMA on a wood or steel frame.
- Wire PMA to charge controller, controller to battery bank.
- Wire dump load in parallel off the battery bank terminals.
- Connect 12V loads or a small inverter.
- Screen your intake. Check daily until you know your water's behavior.

Grid's gone. Stores are looted. Trucks stopped running three days ago. You've got a creek, a garage, and whatever's left on your property. Here's how you make power.
The Junkyard Alternator Rig
Every neighborhood has dead cars. Every dead car has an alternator. That alternator is your emergency generator.
What you're pulling from the vehicle:
- Car alternator — GM, Ford, Dodge, doesn't matter. Internal voltage regulator preferred. Most post-1980 alternators have one. Pull it with a basic wrench set in 20 minutes.
- Serpentine belt or V-belt — grab it off the same vehicle
- Pulleys — one large, one small. You want the water wheel pulley 4–6x larger than the alternator pulley to step up RPM.
- 12V car battery — to excite the alternator field winding
- Jumper cables or 10–12 gauge wire
- A blocking diode — pulled from any old inverter, battery charger, or solar charge controller
What you're building:
A wood or steel frame mount from dimensional lumber and lag bolts. Mount the alternator. Run the belt from your water wheel shaft pulley to the alternator pulley. Water spins the wheel, belt steps up the RPM, alternator generates 12–14V DC.
Exciting the field:
Touch the small exciter terminal on the alternator briefly to your 12V battery positive. Once spinning at speed it sustains itself.
Output: 30–80 amps at 12–14V. Up to 960 watts. Enough to run:
- LED lighting for the whole house
- Ham radio and communications gear
- Phone and battery charging station
- Small chest freezer with load management
- Fan, CPAP, basic medical equipment
The Salvage Water Wheel — No Pelton Wheel? No Problem.
Build it from what's around you:
- 5-gallon buckets cut in half lengthwise — bolted to a wooden or metal spoke wheel as scoop blades
- Axle: steel pipe, rebar, or a pulled car axle shaft
- Frame: 2x6 lumber lag-bolted to two posts driven into the creek bank
- Let the current fill each bucket, rotate the wheel, dump, repeat
Low RPM by nature. Pair it with the belt-and-pulley gear-up to hit alternator threshold. Buildable in an afternoon with hand tools. No power tools required if you have a handsaw and a charged drill.
No Creek? Other Moving Water Options
- Roof rainwater to barrel drop — limited output but charges a radio or phone in a decent storm
- Gravity-fed irrigation lines — if your property has pressure lines with elevation drop, a small inline turbine driving a salvaged motor can trickle-charge a battery bank
- Community resource — a neighbor's pond with slope becomes a shared asset worth organizing around in a true grid-down scenario
What to Stockpile Now So Tier 2 Is Easier
- V-belt assortment — $15–$30 at any auto parts store, buy today
- Assorted pulleys — farm supply or hardware store
- Blocking diodes — pull from old inverters and battery chargers before you need them
- 10–12 gauge wire, ring terminals, inline fuse holders
- A spare alternator — $20–$40 at any Pick-N-Pull junkyard right now
